A few tips to get you going with the voice interface of the prototype.
On the demo, please press the circle on the left side bar to open the microphone. When you hear the little "beep", the system listens to your voice commands. You will hear a different sound when the microphone closes and your input is interpreted.
When the system asks you for some input it will make a sound so that you recognise the microphone is open. After your input there is a different sound to indicate that the microphone is closed.
Example:
System: "What time does the event start?"
Beep 1, microphone opens
User: "Tomorrow at 2 pm" (followed by silence)
Beep 2, microphone closes
When dictating the body of an email, different paragraphs (sections) are created each time the user ends a sentence followed by a pause.
It is important for the user to pause after the end of a phrase, wait for the microphone to close and then open again for the next paragraph.
Example:
System: "Please dictate the body of the email"
Beep 1, microphone opens
User: "Hello Paul" (followed by silence)
Beep 2, microphone closes, paragraph is concluded
System: Beep 1, microphone opens, new paragraph is started
User: "How are you today?"
Beep 2, microphone close, paragraph is created.
If you want to stop a dialogue, you can tell the system to "Cancel" .
Example:
System: "Please dictate the body of the email"
User: "Cancel"
System: "Cancel" (as confirmation, the dialogue is cancelled)
Alternatively, if you do not provide voice inputs / if you do not cancel, the system will prompt you three times:
System: "Pardon?" / "Please repeat" / ...
before cancelling the dialogue.
We have a big range of commands that the user can try out. The following list shows only the "global commands" that the user can ask the system at any point by pressing the orange square. This list does neither include the different options of dialogues that ensue after first prompt, nor the possible responses to system prompts.
The latest list of possible voice commands can be viewed in the user menu of the app.
We keep adding to this list. Please let us know if there are voice commands and utterances missing (you may refer to functionalities differently).
You can close the Speech Interface by clicking and holding the app icon (long press). When the menu shows, select "App info", followed by "Force Stop".
The voice used for any outputs ("Text-To-Speech") depends on the settings on your Android device and would be the same as the Google Assistant uses. To change the voice, you can follow these steps:
On your Android device, go to "Settings".
In the search box at the top, enter "Text-To-Speech Output", and open the corresponding page.
Click on the settings wheel, and select "install voice data". You will see a list of languages.
Select an English language, and the different voice options for that option will be listed. You can listen to a sound sample of the voice. Select your preferred voice for the given language and go back.
Ensure that in the menu for "Text-To-Speech Output" the correct language is selected.
The Speech Interface (as well as any other app using the Google TTS) will now use your selected voice.
